The dark nights are really setting in now and events like Halloween & Bonfire Night provides more opportunities for burglars. Add the fact that so many of us are starting to fill our cupboards & lofts with Christmas presents then we need to be even more aware of security for our homes.
I’ve heard so many stories locally of shed & garages being broken into so we’re taking steps to avoid us being another victim. Take a look at our top 5 tips to keep your home safe this winter and hopefully you’ll keep safe too:
1. LOOK UP YOUR PROPERTY
That means all of your property, including sheds & garages. Even if you’re nipping out for a short while make sure windows & doors are locked. You’d be surprised at how quickly someone can be in and out of your house.
Also make sure any extra keys are well hidden. As soon as someone is in your property they can search for the extra keys to allow other in or even find your car keys and take the car too.
2. MAKE YOUR HOME SEEM OCCUPIED
With the darker nights and winter setting in, think about leaving on some lights around the house if you’re going to be out late into the evening.
I hate the idea of leaving lights on when not needed but I’d rather leave a small lamp on in the evening until we get home as an extra security measure rather than the risk of a break in.
3. CHECK YOUR GARDEN
Make sure there’s nothing left around the garden that can be used for a break in. Ladders or tools can be easily used to gain access to your house, especially if a window is left unsecured.
Make sure any expensive items are locked away such as children’s bikes and toys as criminals will take anything they can sell on easily.
4. INSTALL AN ALARM & OUTSIDE LIGHTING
We have outside lighting but it currently runs off a switch so we actually have to turn it on but recently we’ve installed a solar sensor security light.
At the back of our house we have a small alley way giving access to our back gardens. As the house at the end of the path we’ve installed a Mpow 24 LED Solar Powered Light
which means if anyone walks down the path after dark the light will come straight on. It not only provides additional security for the row of terraced houses but also lights the pathway for us going back to our house. The fact that it’s solar powered is perfect, no wires to worry about and we know it’ll never run out of batteries!
5. DON’T ADVERTISE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
So many people talk about the latest gadgets they’ve bought or when they are going on holiday. They’ll post photos the expensive items they have or talk about how many presents they’ve bought the kids for Christmas. This just leaves you open to opportunists, they know the time and the place to attempt a burglary.
Hopefully with these tips we can keep our homes safe not only this winter but for a long time to come. If you want to buy your own Mpow security light I’ve got a £2.00 off discount code meaning you can get it for only £15.99, just click the link below & add code GQKCPJKR at the checkout.
