We’ve lived in our house for ten years and completely renovated it when we first moved in as it was in a complete state.

Fast forward ten years and we’re more than overdue a makeover, especially in some of the neglected rooms. One of them being our stairs & landing. We have a really narrow & steep set of stairs which have always just been painted magnolia as we’ve never really known how to make full use of the space but I decided it was time for a change. My sister has recently moved & has fully decorated so it’s given me the boost to get down to Homebase & get on with redecorating our home.

A few years back we had the ceiling lowered and spot lights put in as there’s no natural lighting because the stairs run through the centre of our Victorian terrace. This has made a big difference but it was just so bland & boring. I decided to bite the bullet and wallpaper the top of the staircase to bring some colour to the room and to try and ‘widen’ the top of the stairs. It has made much more difference than I realised, the top of the stairs looks and feels much wider as the pattern draws your eye across rather than all the walls blending into one.

Even though I fully repainted the whole room I decided to keep the colour light & bright to make the most of the spotlights. I didn’t realise just how filthy the walls were before I started with the roller, for some reason the Teenager likes to run his hands down the walls every time he comes downstairs so we had lovely grubby marks the whole way down. Hopefully now I’ve started hanging photos on the walls he’ll keep his grubby mitts away!

I’m so pleased with the overall look, it wasn’t a huge make over financially or in timescale but it has made a huge difference. Instead of it just being a corridor to other rooms I actually feel like it brings the look of the whole house together.

What do you think of our stairs & landing makeover?

Love the wallpaper! It makes such a difference – did you hang it yourself? I always get the hubby to do the wallpapering in our house but I really want to do our mantel piece and he keeps saying he doesn’t have time! Perhaps I will tackle it myself now after reading this! You’ve done a great job xx

I love it! The wallpaper makes all the difference! I love when a single wall completely transforms a space. And it’s a great idea to hang pictures down the stairs. We have them in our stairwell and I just love being reminded of our happy family moments every time I climb up or down the stairs. The children love them too and as you say, they have the added bonus of protecting your walls from grubby hands 😉 #HomeEtc xx

The wallpaper is just gorgeous, it makes such a difference I can’t believe it. I always think renovations/refubs have to be major projects but it just goes to show how a small change can have real impact x #HomeEtc
