CAKE CLUB | THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE BIRTHDAY CAKE

Which little boy, or girl doesn’t like Thomas? I made this Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake for my lovely blogging buddy Ally from Messed Up Mum. It was for her little man J’s second birthday, I don’t know who was more excited by the cake, mummy or son.

I didn’t take any step by step photo’s for this cake but I can still give you a few little tips. I always plan my cakes out before I start them so I know exactly what I’m doing.

I think about my cake decorating in layers, this gives the best effect when you’re doing a flat design but want more of a 3D effect. Everything is built on top of the other, so the cake is covered in the sky background then the second landscape layer is added. The fencing & the clouds added on top really make it all stand out.

The Thomas is a little trickier, you have to decide what shapes you can use to create. I always try to use simple cutters where possible as this gives the cleanest finish. Again layer the detail on top of each other, if you tried to piece it together like a jigsaw then it would be far too complicated and layering gives a much better effect.

I’m completely self taught, with a little help from YouTube and have had a few people ask me about putting tutorials up on the blog so I’m beginning to add How To’s & Hint’s & Tips, so if there’s anything in particular you want to know then just leave me a comment.

I’ve also started a new linky, #SundaySweets where I’ll be linking up all my cakes, bakes & sweet recipes so pop over and link up your posts too and share some sweet loving.

I’m joining in with these lovely linkies

That is amazing! My son turns 3 later this year and I’ll have to start thinking about a more adventurous cake than he’s had to far. This one is lovely 🙂
