Travelling or going on a long journey with kids can be a bit of a nightmare if you’re not prepared. Tantrums from boredom or tiredness can be so stressful for both the parents and the kids. Believe me, I know first hand.
Whenever we go anywhere we always make sure we are prepared. Partly due to Archie’s Autism and his need for familiarity and routine but also because he’s a little boy that needs to be kept busy otherwise boredom sets in in about five minutes flat!

Here’s our tips for travelling with kids:

I always make sure I’m well prepared. The iPad is charged, we have colouring books and pens or you could even print off these fab kids games from Transpennine Express to keep them occupied. There’s a super duper maze, word search and crazy noughts & crosses, hours of fun for the journey.

We all get irritable when we’re hungry, especially the little ones that might not understand exactly why they have to wait. We always make sure we have plenty of quick snacks packed, from mini bread sticks to fresh fruit. We skip chocolate & crisps on long journeys as they last thing you need in a confined space is a child on a sugar high!

We can’t go anywhere without Archie’s ‘wagger’ as he calls it. His blanket is such a comfort to him, especially in unfamiliar places that might overwhelm him. His Autism means he really struggles with change, but that blanket can always help sooth him. Whether it’s a favourite toy or teddy, make sure it’s with you on that journey.

In a moving vehicle there’s always the chance of messes and spills, even on a train. I always make sure we have spares just in case an accident happens, but I’ll also pack a hoodie or fleece just in case the weather is really different at your destination than to where you set off. They might even need a change of clothing for the way home if they’ve gotten messy or dirty on your day out.

The little ones and not so little ones can have such fun taking photos of what they see through the window. On a train you can’t play the same kind of games that you might in a car so being able to take some snaps can really keep them occupied.

What are your tips for travelling with kids? Do you have essentials that you need to pack to?

Great ideas… especially the old camera tip. We usually pack an ipad for games and we download some of BB’s favourite programmes too. It keeps him distracted for long car journeys when we go to visit my OH’s family. Anything for a moment of peace! #twinklytuesdays

Lovely tips, definitely more thoughtful than my husband’s favourite, turn the radio up and drive on to just get there quicker. though I’d also add to your list travelling early morning or late evening in PJs in the hope the kids will sleep through the journey. #TwinklyTuesday
