MICROMANAGING YOUR HOUSEHOLD: TAKING THE BUSINESS APPROACH TO WORKING AT HOME

When you’re working at home, you automatically mix your business and personal life. And while you don’t want one to bleed into the other, it happens.

And if you’re working at home while also trying to be a parent at the same time, sometimes the best way to tackle your working day is with a methodical and business-like approach. How can we do this?

THE MORNING BRIEFING

Much like any team gets together before the working day, you need to assemble the members of the household and ensure that everybody knows what’s going to happen until clocking off time. Of course, it’s easier said than done when you’ve got toddlers running around, but this is where the right amount of placation comes in handy. As bad as it may feel to put them in front of the TV, if you can give them enough things to keep them occupied while you complete certain tasks that require your complete attention you can work with ease throughout the day. You know at what point you are at your most productive, so work towards this.

OUTSOURCING

In business, outsourcing becomes one of the most valuable components when we’re not able to do something in-house. When we are in the house, and we’ve got more duties to complete than we have time, this is when we start to take an outsourcing process towards things. But also, in terms of the daily housing duties, things will come up that will need dealing with right away. There are always going to be little hurricanes of damage, whether this is one of your children having an accident, or a plug getting blocked. But at least, you can always contact drain unblockers like Drainboss or batch cook a meal the night before so there’s enough food to have for lunch. What it comes to organising your day, you’ve got to decide which aspects aren’t that important, but also, which need outsourcing.

PRIORITISE

Prioritising means planning your day, but it’s also about figuring out when you’re able to get the most work done. When you work at home, it may not necessarily be about struggling through between the hours of 9 and 5, especially if you’ve got something really important. If necessary, you need to get up a couple of hours before the rest of the family do, even if it is just to plan your day and prepare your mind for a full-on day. You know when your children go down for a nap, so if there are things that need doing throughout the day, you can find the right balance so these tasks are completed but your sanity remains intact.

Sometimes we have to take a more business-minded approach to running a household. But when we have those days where the children are getting on top of us but we can’t just turn off the computer, it’s these moments where we have to create a more methodical approach to our working day. Working at home is stressful at the best of times, and when you have children, this could quadruple the stress, not to mention the fact you don’t feel like you have a proper break. But there are ways to cope, and hopefully, you’ll never have it as bad as this guy…
