If you’ve ever dreamt of waking up with long, fluttering, gorgeous eyelashes, then you’ve probably considered getting semi-permanent eyelash extensions, a global trend that has sprung up over the past few years to respond to that exact wish.
While strip lashes last just one day, these extension lashes last weeks. Imagine having full, feathery lashes intact for a whole month and skipping the whole mascara and falsies hoo-ha! Read on for everything you need to know about eyelash extensions.
Although the trend has become more and more widespread in the UK, you might still have questions about the safety, cost, comfort, and overall process. To help us delve deeper into lash extensions and their pros and cons, we asked lash specialist BL Lashes to tell us about lash extension and what it takes to achieve your dream lashes.
EYELASH EXTENSIONS, WHAT ARE THEY?
Unlike temporary strip lashes, lash extension is not a DIY affair. Although I do have an easy to follow tutorial to apply false lashes. Plus it includes a simple tip even beginners can follow!
Back to everything you need to know about eyelash extensions. Instead, a professional lash technician will guide you through the various options: fiber (synthetic silk or faux-mink), style (classic or volume lash), curl type and lengths. Most salons will have a menu and sample pictures to walk you thrAough, so don’t worry about getting lost in choosing the right one.
Once you choose the lashes you’d like, the individual lash extensions will be applied to each of your natural eyelashes using a semi-permanent glue.
Lash studios offer a variety of extension lengths, curl patterns, and tints so clients can tailor their look. Lash extension is extremely customizable and effective at enhancing your eyes. And, it looks incredible on everyone.
CAN LASH EXTENSIONS DAMAGE MY NATURAL LASHES?
Lash extensions alone will not damage your lashes. When applied properly by a certified lash artist, the procedure is absolutely painless and harmless.
The procedure for getting eyelash extension goes like this:
First, your lash artist will have you lie down and ensure that you are in a comfortable position. Your eyes will be closed for the duration of the process, which typically takes 1.5-3 hours, and you won’t even notice that she’s working on your lashes. Many lash clients fall asleep during the procedure (we call it a ‘lash nap’) and wake up with a beautiful set of lashes.
However, if the extensions were applied improperly (i.e. multiple lash extensions applied onto one natural lash, an extension applied too close to your skin), or the wrong type of extensions were chosen (i.e. extensions too heavy for your natural lashes), it can damage your own lash or cause pain and swelling around your sensitive eye area. This is why you should never apply lash extensions on yourself but visit a licensed and well-reviewed technician instead.
In research done in Japan in 2012, some participants had allergic reactions involving their eyes or eyelids due to eyelash extensions. The study concluded that some ingredients in the eyelash glue used by lash artists to attach the extensions and poor hygiene of the lash salon were to blame for the allergic reactions.
To avoid an allergic reaction to lash extensions, we once again highly recommend doing a thorough research and finding a reputable lash salon that uses the best quality product and is diligent when it comes to hygiene and the health and safety of their clients.
HOW LONG DO LASH EXTENSIONS LAST?
A beautiful set of eyelash extensions can stay on your natural lashes for up to 6-8 weeks, depending on the growth cycle of your natural lashes and how well you take care of your lash extensions.
Some people claim that their natural lashes fall out more after getting lash extensions, but we can confirm that’s not entirely true. In fact, it is completely normal for your natural lashes to fall out every day. Just like our hair, we lose one to five natural eyelashes every day. Luckily they re-grow in their 60 to 90-day growth cycle (the exact cycle depends on the person). It is just easier to notice them falling out when you have lash extensions because that’s where your attention is going to be!
When eyelash extensions do start to fall out, it is important to get them removed professionally. If you decide to pull them out yourself, you can damage your natural lashes.
HOW CAN I MAKE THE LASHES LAST LONGER?
A good aftercare regiment can make your extension lashes last longer. First, you must be particularly careful in the first 24 hours after getting the lash extensions. Your lash glue is still in the curing process, and any contact with water or oil can weaken the bond of the attached lashes. Your eyes should be kept dry, and this includes avoiding showering, saunas, spas, pools, makeup and eye cleansing in this 24-hour period.
Once that’s done, taking care of your lashes gets easier. You just need to avoid any oil-based cleanser, makeup and skincare products near your eyes. Oil is the worst enemy of eyelash extension adhesive.
Lastly, clean your lashes daily with an eyelash foam cleanser and brush your lashes with a mascara wand to keep them clean and neat. With good lash aftercare routine, you can definitely make your extensions stay put longer and prevent eye irritation. Your lash technician will be more than happy to guide you on how to choose good oil-free eyelash extension aftercare products
IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO FALSE LASHES?
Does this all sound too much for you? A more natural approach to your dream lash is also possible. Outer beauty is always tied to inner health—and lashes are no exception. Here are a couple of tips for rapid lash growth.
Your hair (and lashes) is mostly protein, so it benefits from a protein-rich diet. Add more eggs, fish, beans and nuts to your diet.
Take vitamin supplements
Biotin (Vitamin H) is a key supplement when it comes to hair health. It promotes thicker hair follicles and helps the body absorb nutrients.
Use an eyelash growth serum
If you want to see more immediate lash growth action, start using a lash growth serum. All you have to do is to apply the serum on your lash line twice a day: in the morning and before bedtime. Within 28 days, you will see noticeably longer and thicker natural lashes. Eyelash growth serum contains a high concentration of peptide, which strengthens eyelash follicle proteins, thus helping repair damage, hydrating and stimulating the natural growth of eyelashes.
You can use lash growth serum while you have lash extensions, too, if you want to grow your own lashes while still wearing eyelash extensions. In fact, having a healthy and strong natural lash is the best foundation for longer-lasting eyelash extensions, too.
