Do you really need to use hashtags on Instagram? Do they actually work?
YES THEY DOOO!!
Hashtags are a totally FREE way to get your posts in front of the eyes of your target audience. So read on for my tips on how to use hashtags in Instagram
The key to nailing your hashtags is to properly research them in advance.
Grab a brew, a pen and a notepad and start jotting down all the things you would search for if you were someone who was looking for a service like yours. So if, for example, my Instagram is focussed on style for mums/over 30s that also have an interest in sustainable fashion, charity shops & second hand clothing.
Once you’ve got the first few ideas, head over to your Instagram app and click the ‘Search’ tab (the magnifying glass icon on the bottom left of your screen). When you click into the bar that says ‘Search’, paste in any keywords you’ve come up with so far and see if any hashtags come up around it.
Every time you click on one of these hashtags, it will come up with ‘related’ hashtags, so just keep adding any relevant ones to your list!
When you’ve started to build up a decent amount of hashtags, I would chunk them into ‘Hashtag Sets’ of 25-30, and then keep them in the Notes app in your phone! Whenever you post to Instagram, you can quickly copy and paste a hashtag set from your Notes! I have hashtags for days of the week, general fashion, sustainable fashion etc. Then I can mix & match them depending on the content of my Instagram post.
There’s different ways of adding the hashtags, different people do it different ways. Some add lots of full stops then the hashtags so there’s a space between them & the captions. Personally I like to add the hashtags as a comment underneath the post, and not actually in the caption because this can look super messy!
✨ PRO TIP: DO NOT USE THE SAME HASHTAG SET ON EVERY POST!! ✨
Instagram want you to change up the hashtags you use on your posts, so it can actually limit your reach if you always use the exact same hashtags in each post!
To check which hashtags are working well for you, head over to your feed and click on any of your posts. Then tap “View Insights” above the like, comment & paper aeroplane, place your finger on the screen where it says “Post Insights”, and slide that finger up the screen…
Here’s where you can see all the data for how well your post is performing! To check how much interaction you’re getting on your post because of the hashtags you used, look at:
Discovery > Impressions > From Hashtags
….then compare that with the numbers you got on other posts using different hashtags. This will help you see which types of hashtags perform best for you & your posts to maximise your engagement and the chances of your target audience finding your posts!
So yeah, hashtags can be such an amazing tool to help you up your Instagram game. If you’re looking for more blogging tips, social media help & more then you need to check out these posts:
