Just look at my new hair, isn’t it just to dye for? Ok, tacky pun out of the way but I am IN LOVE with my new hair.
I‘d been a redhead for a couple of months, straight out of the box so never the ‘right’ colour I was going for. It was always faded & dull & needed a root touch up within weeks. Plus I ended up with that awful ends being darker than the roots look.
An invitation to Melissa Timperley Salon in the Northern Quarter in Manchester popped into my inbox & I can’t begin to tell you how excited I was to be having my hair done in an award winning salon!
Whenever I’ve used a local salon they just didn’t ‘get’ my hair. I have super thick hair & a LOT of it too. The amount of times I ended up with dodgy layers that almost made me look like I had two styles in one, or when I curled it I ended up with my hair forming a triangle as it was so wide at the sides.
I’d pretty much given up with my hair & wore a mum bun with a headscarf most days.
Granted I adore my hair up in a headscarf, it’s my go to style, but I wanted options. I wanted to wear my hair down, straight or curled, I wanted a style that looked gorgeous no matter what I did with it & I can honestly say Johanna did that for me & more.
I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am with the colour & the cut.
She just totally understood my hair, like really knows her stuff. This is obviously a review but I’d be totally honest either way & I really can’t sing her praises enough.
From the consultation she knew just what I needed to achieve the colour I’d shown her & advised a bleach bath to remove some of the colour build up & pre lighten slightly without damaging the hair with a full bleach.
I’d never heard of a bleach bath before but she explained the process for me. Normally when you bleach your hair, the bleach powder is mixed with peroxide and applied to dry hair. It can be too much if you don’t need a lot of lightening or your hair is fragile. A bleach bath or bleach wash is a milder alternative to this process. The main differences arise from the fact that shampoo is added to the bleach mixture, it is applied to wet hair, and it is generally mixed up with a lower volume of peroxide.
This way is far gentler on your hair, which I really needed as my hair can be quite dry. I really didn’t want it to be damaged by the bleach.
On top of this, applying the preparation to wet hair means that it is much quicker to apply it to the whole head, and the results are very even all over.
To achieve the colour I’d asked for Johanna used slightly different shades on the roots & on the length. I’m almost 38 & have been going grey for about 15 years so my roots can be really bad hence they needed a little darker shade of Wella 7/08 mixed with 7/43, then 7/43 on the length of the hair down to the tips.
The colour isn’t drastically different as this was the colour I was trying so hard to achieve, it’s just a lot brighter & shinier with more of a red to it than orange.
This colour is just perfect for me, I’m so happy being a ginge! I’ve never been to a salon that has been able to achieve the right colour just from being shown a photo. That’s a talent in itself without being able to have that consistency. With having quite a lot of greys coming through my roots are normally so much brighter as they just apply an all over colour.
Another thing about the hairdressers & I think most of you ladies with agree, you ask to keep the length but then they hack about three inches off. Johanna only took the bare minimum from the ends, then moved onto the layers. She talked me through exactly what she was going to do & showed me how much she needed to take off for the layers the remove the weight from my hair & achieve that gorgeous bounce that would work when I both straightened or curled my hair.
I told her I wanted shape around my face so I could have that loose look when putting my hair up. She knew just what I meant & kept it short around my face without taking that short layer all around. I’ve had such a bad experience before where the hairdresser cut my layers so short it almost looked like I had a hat on!
I love the length of the layers she’s put in, when curled my hair just falls into place. That triangle look has gone (thick haired ladies you know exactly what I mean) I am so, so happy with my hair. It almost looks longer than it did before with all the weight gone. It’s got life & bounce instead of being heavy & weighed down.
My whole experience at Melissa Timperley was amazing. You really can tell why they have won awards. And Melissa is so lovely too, she made sure she had time for a chat in between clients to make sure I was happy. I noticed she did this with other clients too so it wasn’t special treatment because I was a blogger.
I can honestly say this was my best experience at a hairdressers. The price is above what I usually pay but the difference in quality of colour & cut is well worth it. I’ve never really liked my previous styles because they just didn’t understand my hair. I’ve finally found somewhere that does & has not only given me what I’ve asked for but has gone above that to give me something I absolutely love.
*A huge thanks to Melissa Timperley Salons for my beautiful hair. I was provided with a cut & colour in exchange for this honest review
