I’ve also got another, much more important reason to keep our home clean & germ free and that’s for my little man. One of his more severe Autistic traits is to lick things, and I don’t mean in that quirky way that toddlers do, I mean lick everything and anything and this includes the furniture and the floor. He’s had some issues with sickness & diarrhoea and I’m convinced its down to his licking habit.
We have lino in the kitchen and laminate flooring in the kitchen so I’ve bought a steam mop to ensure they are as clean and germ free as possible, that means steaming them around five times a day. I also steam the sofas a couple of times a week too. I would prefer to do it more often but I don’t want to damage them. Instead of using polish I dust the surfaces with a microfibre cloth ten wipe everything over with antibacterial wipes. These are an absolute god send as they are so quick & convenient to use, I use baby wipes around the house a lot too especially in the bedroom to give things like his cot and furniture a daily clean.
Archie also prefers to eat directly of the table, sometimes even licking his food directly off the table especially if it’s something soft like yoghurt. I do encourage him to use his plate & cutlery but as he has communication issues and is non-verbal it’s very hard to get him to understand and we’ve been advised not to make it into a big issue as he has numerous issues already around food & textures. I don’t know how many times a day I use antibacterial spray around the kitchen, but I get through bottles of the stuff!
The bathroom is another room that I need to clean properly daily. I always use antibacterial wipes for around the toilet, they can go straight into the bin then, no spreading germs around. I also use the wipes on the sink & taps when we’ve brushed our teeth etc then I revert back to my bathroom spray for the bath & tiles. The floor also gets a steaming daily too.
At the end of the day I always make sure I soak my dish clothes in diluted disinfectant so they are germ free ready to start cleaning again the next day! You may not need to be a thorough as I have to be but here’s a funny little video from Dettol ‘How far will you go to avoid the door knob?’
