Simple Sensory Play with Rice & Sand

Archie has a lot of sensory issues especially around textures so I’m on the hunt for sensory activities that will engage him and might help manage some of his Autistic Traits.

One thing he hates is sand but that doesn’t mean he can’t have fun with his Little Tikes sand & water table, it just means I need to come up with different ways to play. I saw a couple of posts on this week’s #ToddlerApprovedTuesday that got my little brain whirring so I raided the pantry & found I had both rice & lentils, a great substitute for sand.

One thing I would consider next time is to leave out the water. Archie did enjoy playing with the rice & water together but it was messy so I ended up putting him in his swimming cossie! The mess wasn’t much of a problem for us as we have AstroTurf so as soon as the sun had dried the grass I was able to whip out the Hoover & clean it all up but I don’t think I’d use water every time we play.

Archie loved every minute and happily played for a good 30 mins, we went back to it a couple of times again before he got bored but it was definitely a success and I’ll be keeping the pantry well stocked with cheap rice& lentils from now on 🙂

Have you got any other recommendations for sensory play?

I wonder how he would do with bird seed? Then you wouldn’t have to clean it up, just broom it into the yard. It sure looks like he had a great time! Good for figuring it out for him, what a great Mom.

Great idea to use lentils etc, they would make a lovely sound when being played with.
One thing D loved was dinosaurs and I used to put loads and loads of ice (from various sized containers) on a sand table and she’d “play” Ice Age. Used to freeze glitter and leaves in the ice and she’d love it as it melted.

we love playing with rice – I think I have written before about using rainbow coloured rice. I have a tuff spot arriving this week so I plan a few things like this for my two so will be using lentils. Another idea would be things like dried chickpeas or broken up spaghetti?

I’m so thrilled that other posts on #toddlerapprovedtuesday inspired this sensory play for Archie, I’m glad he liked it. What a great idea to have AstroTurf in the gardenM

Sorry my comments are so late this week, thanks for linking #toddlerapprovedtuesday xx
